Just try to take control of the mix tape at a ‘Lodge Hang’ with Jeff Martin; I dare you. When we got word that House of TARG in Ottawa would be hosting what Martin has titled Skreedlemania (I just got that it rhymes with Beatlemania literally this second), well fuck we had to see what this wacky bastard was up to. Digging multiple genres of music, as we do, and sick of seeing a full 2 hours of the same genre at shows, as we are, Martin decided to organize a 2-Day event that would see bands from across a wide spectrum of genres gracing the stage. On the first night you have everything from blistering punk rock by the likes of Slim and Popular to the beautiful folk feel of Tara Holloway to the wizard fuzznastics of the stoner rock bowel quakers Monobrow. The second night sees the likes of personal favorites Rex Heck diving into some harmonies and bouncy riffage, the wacky antics of The Sir John A Macdonalds, the bright and bashing punk rock of those Halifax houligans Outtacontroller, and the never-disappointing Stand GT. A little bearded bird told me this was part of Marvest, a sub-series for CityFolk, but these nights could definitely stand on their own as a good mix of great tunes. Even if you’re one of those folks who needs to check out the circus that is Van Morrison up the road from House of TARG, as I am, you have plenty of time to cross the bridge for some pinball and rock after Van shows us his brown eye.
