Soon, there will only be a small handful, like less than one could count on one hand, of record labels releasing decent music. There was a time when the
indie label seemed to take over the business, but times have seriously changed in the last 10 years. Even a few of the majors have bowed out of the game. Well, as of yesterday, word is Sony Music has acquired German hard rock label Century Media.
Touted as one of the best labels for metal, Century Media houses such acts as Lacuna Coil, Arch Enemy, Queensryche, Kansas, and Steve Hackett. Sources from within the Sony camp state that the intention is to take a commanding hold on the rock, prog, alternative, and metal world. Although Sony will assimilate Century Media into its branding, as well as take over the distribution powers in Europe and most of the world, Bob Morelli from long time peddlers RED Distribution states that they will continue to handle Century Media acts in the U.S.
Century is one of the best hard rock labels in the business and Robert is an accomplished executive who understands the genre like few others,” Morelli said. “We are excited to continue working with Century to grow the business for their talented roster of artists.
Hopefully, this doesn’t mean the acts get shelved or that their priority gets shifted behind the pop artists Sony works with. It actually could mean that we may get to have some of these bands worked harder over here, and even get their records at a better price. With the way the majors are handling their business of late, I’m not going to hold my breath. – FATS
