I love when Matt from Self Destructo Records sends me music in the mail, its like getting really cool Christmas presents all year long. When this batch came to the rockandrolljunkie.com office, I was stoked to throw some new tunes in the stereo. The Jonny Manak & The Depressives’ Cold Pizza and Warm Beer stood out from the rest. The art work on the front reminded me of our good buddy Dirty Donny. On the first pass I thought to myself they sound like the Ramones, second pass I thought they sound like the New Bomb Turks, and third pass I was singing along with this batch of fuck’n kick ass tunes. Jonny follows the KISS rule (Keep It Simple Stupid), and they do it very well.
Jonny Manak & The Depressives is a wild combination of rock & roll influences from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. There are elements of surf rock, rock & roll, punk and garage rock littered throughout their songs. Influences include Chuck Berry, Dead Boys, Dick Dale, Link Wray, Little Richard, The Sonics, The Stooges, Bowie, The Ramones, Johnny Thunders, etc. Since 2006, they released 4 full length albums and 2 EPs on CD, vinyl and digitally. The band is Jonny on guitar/lead vox, Neil Young on bass/vox and Thor Dsr on drums.
I highly recommend this album. I was trying to peg just one stand out song for this review, but all the songs are so damn good! Throw it in your car stereo and I guaranteed you’ll be singing along in no time. Enjoy these gems, they don’t come around that often. – DAN
