SongoftheDay: REBEL GIRL by BIKINI KILL

SongoftheDay: REBEL GIRL by BIKINI KILL

In my certainly-humble opinion, you can’t make a list about women in rock without including Kathleen Hanna and Bikini Kill. As a young girl, resolving feelings of discontent with your position, specifically in a male-dominated, often-violent punk 04rock scene, can be daunting. Kathleen Hanna has never been afraid to claim space, and through Bikini Kill, has worked to make it safe for women to participate in the punk rock community. Her lyrics, soaked in feminist ideology, inspired an army of riot grrrls. On a personal note, the influence of Kathleen on my politics cannot be overstated. Occasionally, we throw a cover of this song into our set, and the energy it gives me never fails to fuel the rest of our songs. – TRACY

(This week’s SongoftheDay segments are being guest-curated by Tracy A. of Cross Dog.  Not only is Tracy a force to be reckoned with on stage, her political views are equally as fierce, and can be felt in the passion of her lyrics.  We are super stoked to have her guest curate some music celebrating the contributions of many of the most iconic women in music.  To learn more about Tracy A. and her great band Cross Dog, click here.)
