SongoftheDay: AS WE USED TO SING by BUSHMAN’S REVENGE
I wanted to feature another song by Bushman’s Revenge (“Jeg Baker Bokosboller”), as it is vividly linked in my mind to driving around in the California desert a few years ago, but alas, I couldn’t find it on YouTube to feature here. However, this song (a Sonnny Sharrock cover) is no slouch. Fats and I saw this Norwegian trio last year at the Ottawa International Jazz Festival, and they put on a flawless show. Astutely describing themselves as “Rock & Actionjazz”, they’ve released six albums, including one live one, and another of covers. Their latest, Thou Shalt Boogie!, is a little heavier on atmospherics than previous releases (they’ve employed a Hammond organist on this one), but is slowly becoming my favourite of theirs. Excellent tunes for long drives.
(This week’s SongoftheDay segments are being guest-curated by Paul Slater. Paul plays guitar in Monobrow, one the best up-and-coming instrumental stoner rock outfits to hit the scene in a long while. Check out the music of Monobrow here.)
