Alright. The over-the-top hype of tomorrow’s ‘fight of the century’ between boxing powerhouses Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. is ramped up so high that it will most likely end up as the biggest pay-per-view event in the history of the sport. As it should be. But, and sure as fuck there is a ‘but’, this fight should have happened 5 years ago. Perhaps this has more to do with fight promoter Bob Arum, but Pacquiao’s corner has been vying for this fight for a long time now. I don’t like that fact that Mayweather has had to wait until Manny is a lot older and possibly far enough away from his A-Game to try to beat him. Pacquiao has wanted a piece of that guy for a good while now.
Over here at rockandrolljunkie.com we have a few folks in the camp that love the fights. Myself, I live for boxing, and to be honest I have had a deep love for the story and fighting style of Manny Pacquiao. I’m also not a complete idiot, and understand that Mayweather is an undefeated fighter and many folks have him as the victor Saturday night. Perhaps that will be the case, but that chicken shit should have fought Manny when they were both in their prime. Now, it can be said that this is all a play of a genius; hype the fucking thing for years, make us hate you for not taking the fight, then give us what we want. Fuck that. What I wanted was fight when they were both firing on all cylinders. Yeah, it’s going to be a great fight, but Manny would have literally destroyed him 5 years ago. In a sport where you decide yes or no to a fight, Mayweather has done what any smart champion would have done – picked his battles strategically. To me, that’s the mark of a fucking paper champion, not a true champ.
There will be piles of money made tomorrow night for a fuck load of people all over the world. This fight might even kill the internet with all the illegal streaming attempted, but it still makes me a bit sad to think this could have been a far greater event 5 years ago. Whatever, fuck me, I’m just an idiot who is passionate about the sport of boxing, with all of its strategy and technique; what do I know about the big business of winning? What I do know is I love Manny Pacquiao and hope he kicks the shit out of that fucking money hungry fuck Mayweather – even if he is a marketing genius. Here’s a good look at what many are calling the greatest fight since Muhammad Ali met Joe Fraser all them years back. – FATS
